Driving Semiconductor Innovation in Singapore with ST Engineering
Mar 27 2025

NSTIC (GaN) recently welcomed Mr Desmond Kok, Vice President and Head of Advanced Manufacturing, Advanced Networks & Sensors, Digital Systems at ST Engineering, for a focused visit. The session explored how Gallium Nitride (GaN) technologies can support the next generation of defence, aerospace, and smart city systems. The visit also highlighted how collaboration contributes to advancing semiconductor innovation in Singapore.
Showcasing GaN Capabilities for High-Impact Applications
Innovation grows stronger when research meets real-world application. During the visit, the NSTIC (GaN) team shared updates on ongoing projects in microwave electronics and high-power amplifier development. These areas demonstrate how GaN is reshaping system design through high efficiency, compact size, and superior thermal performance.
Mr Kok was introduced to the centre’s complete R&D pipeline, from materials and device development to system-level integration. The team also showcased recent GaN breakthroughs that improve output power, energy efficiency, and reliability under demanding conditions. These achievements are especially relevant to radar systems, satellite communications, and secure network operations.

Shared Vision for Sustainable and Scalable Technology
The visit opened discussions about how GaN technologies can support sustainability goals while delivering performance improvements. ST Engineering’s expertise in digital infrastructure and integrated systems complements NSTIC (GaN)’s mission to develop advanced, future-ready technologies.
Both organisations discussed challenges such as energy optimisation, miniaturisation, and thermal management. GaN’s properties make it a strong candidate to address these issues. This alignment reflects Singapore’s growing leadership in semiconductor innovation in Singapore, where collaboration between research and industry drives progress.
The session reinforced the shared goal of turning GaN research into scalable, sustainable solutions that can strengthen national capability and contribute to global deep-tech advancement.
Building a Foundation for Future Collaboration
The meeting also explored opportunities for partnership between NSTIC (GaN) and ST Engineering. Several areas for collaboration were identified:
-
Co-developing GaN-based RF and microwave components for sensing and communication platforms
-
Joint validation of high-power amplifier designs for aerospace and defence systems
-
Applied research on thermal management and system ruggedisation
-
Ecosystem alignment to support Singapore’s innovation and sustainability goals
By combining NSTIC (GaN)’s research expertise with ST Engineering’s applied engineering capabilities, both organisations aim to accelerate the transition from prototype to implementation. These joint efforts contribute to the broader goal of strengthening semiconductor innovation in Singapore and enhancing its role in the global technology ecosystem.
