A Shared Commitment to Innovation with MediaTek and EDB
Mar 13 2025

NSTIC (GaN) was pleased to welcome a delegation from MediaTek and the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) for an engaging visit focused on collaboration, innovation, and the future of Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology. The session highlighted how industry, research, and government can work together to accelerate semiconductor advancement and strengthen Singapore’s position as a global hub for deep-tech innovation.
A Visit Focused on Innovation and Collaboration
The delegation included Mr CM Hung, Assistant Vice President of Technology, Mr Bun Suan Heng, General Manager, and Ms Vanessa Chan, Senior Manager from EDB. Their visit represented an important step in aligning NSTIC (GaN)’s R&D initiatives with national innovation goals.
During the session, NSTIC (GaN) shared its latest achievements in GaN device development, materials research, and high-performance system integration. The team presented how GaN is being applied across wireless communications, power electronics, and industrial automation. In addition, the discussion emphasised how NSTIC (GaN)’s end-to-end capabilities—from prototyping to validation—enable the practical deployment of GaN technology across multiple industries.
This engagement reaffirmed the importance of collaboration between research institutions and companies like MediaTek, whose innovations continue to shape the global semiconductor landscape.
Key Discussion Themes: Synergies and Strategic Growth
The discussions were both insightful and forward-looking. A key highlight was the alignment between MediaTek’s expertise as a global fabless semiconductor company and NSTIC (GaN)’s focus on next-generation materials that enhance performance and efficiency.
Participants explored how GaN’s potential in RF applications, high-efficiency power systems, and fast-charging solutions can drive future technology breakthroughs. Furthermore, EDB’s role in guiding national strategy and supporting research-to-market transitions added depth to the dialogue.
Together, these conversations reflected how Singapore’s deep-tech ecosystem—supported by research centres like NSTIC (GaN)—functions as a collaborative semiconductor research corporation, connecting science, technology, and commercialisation.
Building Toward Joint Opportunities
The session provided a strong foundation for exploring practical opportunities in co-development, prototyping, and technology validation. Some of the collaborative pathways discussed included:
- Joint exploration of GaN applications for advanced communications hardware
- Strategic research engagements focused on next-generation semiconductors
- Integration of NSTIC (GaN) capabilities into MediaTek’s innovation roadmap
- Ecosystem support from EDB to bridge R&D to commercialisation
By bringing together world-class industry players and national development agencies, NSTIC (GaN) is creating a collaborative model that not only accelerates research but also translates it into real-world impact.
A Step Forward for Singapore’s Deep-Tech Ecosystem
At NSTIC (GaN), we believe that innovation thrives when ideas move across boundaries. The MediaTek and EDB delegation exemplified the kind of partnership that brings together global industry leaders and national innovation agencies.
Moreover, the visit reinforced our shared goal of creating technologies that are not only advanced but also scalable and sustainable. These exchanges support Singapore’s ongoing mission to position itself as a leader in deep-tech and semiconductor development. Through active collaboration, NSTIC (GaN) continues to contribute to a vibrant and future-ready ecosystem.
Looking Ahead
NSTIC (GaN) extends its gratitude to MediaTek and EDB for their time, insights, and commitment to partnership. Moving forward, we remain focused on advancing GaN technology through applied research, industry collaboration, and ecosystem alignment.
