Advancing Radio Frequency Innovation for Singapore’s Future Communications with IMDA

NSTIC (GaN) had the pleasure of hosting Mr Koh Wee Sain, Mr David Khoo, and Mr Zhang Haolin from the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA). The visit opened an insightful dialogue on how GaN-based radio frequency technologies can strengthen Singapore’s future communications infrastructure and support the nation’s digital transformation goals.

Showcasing the Power of RF GaN for Next-Generation Connectivity

During the visit, our team provided an overview of ongoing research and development in RF GaN device design, system integration, and performance optimisation. The discussion highlighted how GaN is enabling significant progress in high-frequency, high-power communication systems, from 5G base stations to emerging 6G platforms.

With its high electron mobility, strong thermal efficiency, and wide bandgap properties, GaN is uniquely suited for radio frequency applications that demand high speed, compact form factors, and energy efficiency. These characteristics are key to advancing Singapore’s digital infrastructure and future connectivity landscape.

Strategic Dialogue with IMDA

The visit included a series of discussions on how NSTIC (GaN)’s research focus aligns with IMDA’s vision for a resilient and forward-looking communications ecosystem. IMDA’s leadership in policy, infrastructure planning, and technological innovation provides valuable direction for translating advanced research into meaningful applications.

Together, we explored opportunities such as:

  • Co-developing testbeds and pilot programmes for real-world validation

  • Exploring potential applications in satellite communications, public safety, and smart mobility

The exchange reaffirmed our shared interest in leveraging radio frequency innovation to enhance connectivity, strengthen national capability, and enable long-term digital transformation.
